Help IC HSHP Students Study “Broadly.”

 Greetings to my fellow alums!           

No, that’s not a typographical error - in 2011, HSHP students and faculty not only continue to experience the traditionally defined, international study abroad but are also redefining their experiences to “study broadly”. This means much more than travel: it includes all aspects of priceless, experiential learning outside the classroom including internships, fieldwork, and off-campus programs here in the U.S. and overseas.

As an alumnus that has journeyed full circle to stand on the opposite side of the podium, I have come to value our school’s unique emphasis on experiential learning now more than ever. Here are a couple of pride points about HSHP that you may not already know:

• 16 of 18 HSHP majors require some form of experiential learning for completion.

•  At any given time, 40% of HSHP students are active in experiential learning programs.

By clicking on the links below, you can witness the power of students learning beyond the classroom. Their journeys vary from helping orphans with AIDS in Malawi to student teaching in Cyprus to working at the Olympic Games in Beijing (and in 2012, London), to even pursuing internships and field work in professional athletics. 

But as you can imagine, the costs of travel and living expenses associated with these programs are not cheap, and a majority of deserving HSHP students seek financial aid every year to take part in these experiences.  That is why, along with the entire HSHP faculty and administration, I am asking you to join us in this campaign to assist the IC HSHP Students Fund to Study Broadly.

Every gift counts, and will go directly to need-based relief for students to pursue very real rewards beyond campus. As your professional peers of the future, they will be all the more gifted (and grateful!), as a result of these opportunities.
