During his 30+ years of teaching Instructional Design at the University of Oklahoma, Tillman “Tim” Ragan, Ph.D., helped create and bring prominence to the Instructional Psychology and Technology (IPT) program and served as a mentor to countless students and instructional design professionals throughout his career. As you know, Dr. Ragan passed away on March 7, 2010.

To honor Tim’s dedication to students of Instructional Psychology and Technology, and the legacy he leaves at OU, a former student has made a generous seed gift to establish the Dr. Tillman “Tim” J. Ragan Endowed Scholarship Fund to benefit students of instructional design and development. It is our goal to create an endowment of at least $20,000 in order to provide an annual $1,000 scholarship to a student of promise. We hope that you will help us reach this goal with a gift today!

NOTE:  Please forward to any friends and colleagues that may want to honor Tim, and support IPT students at OU.

I was the recipient of a coveted “Timmy” award at the film festival in his Ed Tech class (8mm!). I think as a result, when a replacement was needed for a graduate teaching assistant spot, Tim remembered and offered me the position, though I was only working on my Masters. That led to developing an expertise, and contact with the creative and thoughtful people in Tim’s program. My career began there, and took me to Western Oklahoma State College, following my getting my M.Ed., which was the only higher education job opening in Ed Tech that year. I spent almost 20 years there, further learning more about the rapidly-changing field of instruction technology, and how to serve faculty and students. I was fortunate to return to the College of Education at OU to complete a PhD in Adult and Higher Education, and serve Oklahoma higher education as a member of the executive staff for the Oklahoma State Regents from 1996-2007. My initial work there was in instructional technology, but over time I was given the opportunity to serve in broader capacities, including Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and Interim Chancellor. Tim’s creative and supportive leadership influenced many who learned through his classes and programs. He showed how men and women could have fun, do interesting and important work, and develop professional relationships that were meaningful and lasting. I still have my “Timmy” award, and have retrieved it from its file, and will have it framed and on display, so I can be reminded (and can remind others) of one of my friends and mentors. And I owe much to Tillman Ragan for giving me my first opportunity to work with faculty and students in pursuit of their higher education.

When I first got to know Tim the phrase “work hard/ play hard” was in vogue, and I remember thinking that Tim did that very well.
