Tovoia Miner was self-employed and had no health insurance when she came to the Capital Breast Care Center after finding a pea-sized lump in her breast. A sonogram and further tests revealed that Tovoia had triple-negative cancer, an aggressive type of cancer that disproportionately affects African American women.
Thanks to gifts from generous donors, we were able to be there for Tovoia.
In her own words:
CBCC went right into motion, helping me develop a course of action. They immediately gave me literature and advice, and they referred me to an incredible doctor, Dr. Regina Hampton. What really impressed me was that they didn’t just drop me off in Dr. Hampton’s lap, they have stayed in touch with me throughout my cancer journey, calling to check on me, sending me little gifts, and inviting me out to cancer support events … If CBCC had not been there at such a critical time to diagnose my cancer early, I may not now be here for my family.
Capital Breast Care Center is the only community-based breast cancer screening clinic in the area—perhaps in the nation—that provides breast health services to women regardless of their ability to pay.
